Sri Lanka have won the second ODI at Pallekele by three wickets to chalk up a historic victory over New Zealand, thus forcing the tourists to stay with an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. It had been the first full series of ODI matches that Sri Lanka had won over New Zealand since 2012 as they overhauled a modest target of 210 set before them on a rain-affected match trimmed to 47 overs per side.
The match belonged to Kusal Mendis, whose unbeaten 74* off 109 balls took Sri Lanka home in a nervy finish. Battling through cramps and a sluggish pitch, Mendis showed immense resilience and composure in his innings- typically aggressive but on this occasion, unorthodox with only six boundaries. Instead, Mendis relied on singles and doubles, which accounted for 67% of his runs as he exhibited mental toughness.
"I was grinding along with cramps, but kept telling myself to stay calm and play the ball on its merit," said Mendis after the match. His steady presence was crucial as Sri Lanka navigated through difficult patches, especially after being reduced to 93 for 5.
In conjunction with Kamindu Mendis (5) and Maheesh Theekshana (27*), Kusal rotated the strike, keeping the scoreboard ticking, for their team to chase successfully. It is basically the 47-run partnership between Kusal and Theekshana, which by difference of fate became very important in the end.
Batting first, New Zealand lost all their wickets to be bowled out for 209 in 46.3 overs. Mark Chapman (76) and Mitchell Hay (49) were the stars for the Black Caps, but their knock was never enough to put up a fight. The batting lineup of New Zealand was in trouble all game, and the spinners of Sri Lanka created a ruckus.
Maheesh Theekshana was the star with the ball, claiming 3 for 31 in his 10 overs. Jeffrey Vandersay contributed with three wickets also, and the other teammate was Asitha Fernando with a couple of key scalps to give which the Sri Lankan spinners ensured the Black Caps never built any significant partnerships, applying constant pressure.
Sri Lanka's fielding, however, was the highlight. Avishka Fernando was everywhere in the deep, with three crucial catches. His two diving grabs to dismiss Phillips and Chapman were some of the best in the series. Pathum Nissanka also went for a stunning dive to dismiss Mitchell Santner, ensuring Sri Lanka had the game totally under its control.
New Zealand's bowlers, spearheaded by Michael Bracewell, staged a good battle with a disciplined effort. Bracewell, who took 4 for 36, proved unshakeable to break free from, but Sri Lanka cleverly concentrated on the other bowlers in the attack- Mitchell Santner being one of them who ended with 1 for 33. At a stage when Bracewell and Santner were at their best, Sri Lanka had steady partnerships and Kusal Mendis's insistent mind helped the team go across to the target with 3 wickets in hand.
The run chase was certainly anything but a cakewalk for Sri Lanka. The dismissal of Kamindu Mendis for a duck at the score of 93 for 5 gave New Zealand a feeling that they could get an opportunity to get back into this match. However, Kusal's tranquil coolness at the other end helped with the blistering comeback of Theekshana as they crossed the line in the 45th over.
It was a triumph for the Sri Lankan team as they won their first series in over ten years. This makes Sri Lanka's ODI history a brilliant achievement.
The team is well ahead in the series and is likely to win this as well, while New Zealand will be looking to regroup in the final match to avoid another defeat.
