The 2024-25 season of Barcelona in La Liga had been running extremely smoothly until their visit to the Basque Country and the match against Real Sociedad at the Anoeta Stadium. Having won four games back to back, Barcelona was on top of the game, and their young sensation Lamine Yamal was the spark behind their attacking success so far. But without their teenager sensation, Barcelona went wrong, losing their winning streak at home in a 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad. Now, several questions arise: just how deep is the Catalan club? How dependent on key players are they? And how are they going to cope with the challenges in this season?
FC Barcelona stepped into the campaign for the 2024-25 La Liga season with renewed hope. Under Xavi Hernandez, a lot of youth injected with experience was blended into one playing entity, and it seemed to show. Yamal's appearances had been a breath of fresh air for Barcelona. The 16-year-old teenager had already stamped his mark with dribbling, pace, and creativity. His contributions gave the team an upward dimension up front, providing much-needed width and flair to Barcelona's forward play. But against Real Sociedad, the team had to cope without the services of its starlet. The lone casualty of the first XI was Yamal, who, due to injury, had to sit out, and his absence proved greater than anyone could have ever thought.
The other end boasted a Real Sociedad that wasn't necessarily a side to which any automatic attention was immediately given, but whom under their manager, Imanol Alguacil, had always been improving. The Basques were ever a side to beat in their own backyard, and they came into the game on top of a fantastic streak. The match was expected to be tough and grueling, but the absence of Yamal on the Barcelona side would play into the eventual outcome of the game.
It seemed right from the start that Barcelona was lacking that spark of Yamal. Without the new young winger to be able to create and stretch opposition space, attacking play lost its fluidity. They just could not break through Real Sociedad's defense.
This has proven to be one of the biggest weaknesses of the match for Barcelona since with Yamal missing, no one made runs beyond the back, stretching the opposition wide, and it left them having to play through the middle against the rather deep side set in a 4-4-2 well-organized formation from Real Sociedad. While Lewandowski is certainly a world-class striker, he failed to find his involvement in the game without help from the flanks in terms of support and service.
Sociedad took the initiative through their energetic interchanging attacking football. A sharp counter-attack saw Kubo sail down the right wing, where his pinpoint cross was met with the head of Alexander Sørloth and none of it was so wrong as it passed the Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen. This was a wake-up call for Barcelona but meant that the team lacked solidity in defense as key defensive players were missing. Absence of Yamal's energy going forward added to this feeling.
Often, the Barcelona defense looked fragile, too. The match was 1-1 when Real Sociedad got their second in rather similar circumstances-after a build-up, a ball was slid through the Barcelona defense to find Oyarzabal. There he showed poise in front of goal, taking his time to slot the ball past Ter Stegen. That left Barcelona with a mountain to climb.
Losing Barcelona, and especially against Real Sociedad 2-1, is such a sobering reminder to oneself that even the best clubs are bound to fail when specific key elements are missing in the game. Yamal's injury has been further set back, but perhaps much more important than that point is that it is also another indication that this is not going to be the same failed side of Barcelona which failed sans all that in the previous campaigns.
All thanks to Xavi with his tactical flexibility and an array of world-class individuals in Lewandowski, Gavi, and Pedri will ensure an amount of solid foundation that the side can rebound from such an impending loss.
A match that will end as an example to all fans that football is dangerous and unpredictable, and the favorite to win at any given moment can have an off-day even when the team is very good. Barcelona's work ahead now is trying to regroup and moving forward with their focus back on adapting to life without Lamine Yamal-for at least the time being.
